Coloma, 'Alarije Dorado'
"Coloma is a winery of family character, where the efforts of parents and children is joined. Our human team works to keep alive the philosophy and love that this vocation demands. We have been farmers and winemakers since 1966, conscious that before anything else, a wine is born and made in the vineyard."
The fruit for the Alarije Dorado was harvested at night in order to keep the grapes at a cool temperature. Fully destemmed and lightly crushed less than one hour after harvesting. The must was then macerated and fermented at a controlled temperature 12ºC and inoculated with indigenous yeasts selected from the estate. 100% free-run juice.
Alarije [ah-la-REE-hay] is a native grape from Extremadura. The name comes from Arabic “Al’arís” which means creeping vine. It was still a common variety in Extremadura until the 1980s when, due to its low yields and low alcohol, it became unpopular among growers. When Amelia joined the winery as winemaker in 1997, one of her main objectives was to recover this indigenous variety due to its capacity to withstand the heat.
