Almaroja, 'Mateo'
“This is the dream of a mother: Being able to dedicate what she enjoys doing most, to the one she loves most. Her son.”
Charlotte Allen, owner and winemaker of Almaroja, farms the grapes for her wines in Arribes del Duero, the only denominación de origen in Spain that is entirely within a national park.
The 70 years old Mencía and the 15 years old Bruñal used for the Mateo undergo a 3-4 day pre-maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by a three week fermentation (using wild yeasts) with daily punching downs. Mateo then spends 10 months in 500-liter, third use barrels before being bottled with no fining, filtration, or stabilization.
Bruñal is a variety indigenous to Arribes del Duero.
Mateo is the name of winemaker Charlotte Allen's son.
