Alemany i Corrio, 'Sot Lefriec'
"This wine retains the essence of our vineyards and of this robust and less well-known Penedès, the essence of long aging, complexity and nuance; of the true character of our old vines."
-Irene Alemany and Laurent Corrió, owners and winemakers, Alemany i Corrió
"A wine without limits", Sot Lefriec is the first wine Irene and Laurent crafted after returning to Penedès. The couple were deciding where they wanted to make wine, and following the suggestion of Irene's father, they settled on vines planted by her grandfather. Using viticultural practices they learned while studying winemaking in Burgundy, Irene and Logan brought tactics such as yield management, hand-harvesting, and the use of indigenous yeasts. Their first vintage in 1999 was met with such critical acclaim, they decided to continue making wine in Irene's homeland.
Irene and Logan's intent with Sot Lefriec is to make the best possible Bordeaux style wine in Penedes; if the vintage isn’t up to their standards, they won't bottle. This Carinyena, Merlot and Cabernet blend spends 4 to 5 weeks macerating on its skins, before maturing for 24 to 30 months in oak barrels, and an additional year in bottle before release.
Sot, or Soto comes from the word for a shaded area near the vineyard where one can relax.
